Teaching Philosophy

I believe that...

  • Education is the medium that empowers students to take strides in making their lives, their community , and our planet a safer and healthier place

  • Every student can learn

  • Teachers should hold high standards for all students

  • Students should be active learners and are responsible for their own learning

  • Throughout the learning process, students should have choices

  • Instruction should allow diversity of culture, language, interests, and abilities

  • All instruction should include connections to students' lives

  • Activities should reflect current subject area standards

  • Teachers are critical to creating a safe, productive learning community

  • Learning activities should be hands on and active when possible

  • Teachers must be reflective practitioners

  • Teachers must look beyond the textbook

  • Parents should be involved in their students' learning

  • Instruction should address students' multiple intelligences and learning styles

  • Assessment should inform planning and teaching

  • Assessments should include formal and informal measures

  • Students need to have opportunities to collaborate and learn from each other

  • Technology should be integrated in all subject areas

  • Teachers should use multiple grouping configurations such as small group, whole class, partnerships and individual work

  • There should be both vertical and horizontal collaboration among teachers

  • Flexibility is key

  • Teachers are lifelong learners

Some of the statements above are beliefs I held about education as I graduated with my bachelors' degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University. The experiences I have had over the past seven years of teaching have helped to solidify these ideas.  Many of them, however, are beliefs that I have added along my journey as an educator. I spent four years teaching second grade as a part of a full time co-teaching team. This experience above all others challenged me both professionally and personally, and has been a catalyst for a tremendous amount of growth. I have learned so many things about myself, my practice, and the world around me. In the end, I feel that I have developed an extensive list of beliefs that I truly take to heart as I teach my students every day. Most importantly, I believe now more than ever, that teachers are lifelong learners.
